The Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is a 2001 British-American fantasy film directed by Chris Columbus, written by Steve Kloves, and produced by David Heyman. It stars Daniel Radcliffe as the protagonist of the series, Harry Potter. The film grossed $914 million worldwide during its initial theatrical run on a budget of $75 million. There are numerous plot points in the film that are changed or omitted in the books, including crucial plot lines. The Philosopher's Stone is the only book in the series with a different title. Sirius Black is not mentioned at all throughout his excursion with Harry, thus creating plot inconsistencies throughout the rest of the series. The film begins with Harry's second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He is confused by why he received a letter from his estranged godfather, Sirius Black, asking for help finding his son, Peter Pettigrew (whom Hagrid had mistaken for Peter). Hagrid explains that Peter has become a wizard and hid from him and the law. Harry's fear of his abusive Aunt and Uncle leads him to avoid them, instead staying with Hagrid for the summer, who has since been kicked out of Hogwarts. During his third year, Dumbledore announces that Lord Voldemort has returned to power and he must be killed rather than captured. As a result, the Triwizard Tournament is held at Hogwarts. Two champions will compete with dragons, one from each school: Hogwarts, Beauxbatons Academy of Magic, and Durmstrang Institute. Harry finds out that he is to compete in the tournament, despite being under-age. Harry finds himself magically entered into the tournament along with fellow Hogwarts students Cedric Diggory, Fleur Delacour, and Viktor Krum. They are all required to find an item hidden by a champion somewhere in Hogwarts without being caught by the cameras placed all over the school. During this time, Lord Voldemort regains human form and recruits Draco Malfoy for his plans. The Goblet of Fire picks Fleur's name as a fourth contestant. Harry discovers that he must face dragon breeders, Hut-on-the-Rock, where they are holding the egg of a Norwegian Ridgeback dragon. Harry also meets Quirinus Quirrell, a teacher at Hogwarts. Harry and Cedric find the egg and return it to the dragon's nest. They subsequently decide to compete in the third task, which is to retrieve a golden egg from the titular cauldron of fire under the Hogwarts' lake. Harry makes his way to the cauldron, where he finds that Cedric has already retrieved it and made it away with it. Harry fails because Voldemort's other followers attack him from behind, allowing Cedric to seize both cups before they can be destroyed by flames from a nearby torch. cfa1e77820
